Most people who track peptides at all do it in the Notes app or a Google Sheet. Here's what that approach misses — and what actually changes when you switch to a purpose-built app.

What the Notes App Gets Right

The Notes app is fast. No onboarding, no setup, immediately available on any device. For someone logging a single compound once daily, "BPC-157 250mcg SubQ left abdomen" timestamped in Notes captures the essential fact. It's low friction and leaves no footprint in an app ecosystem. There's a real argument for it at the lowest complexity level.

A spreadsheet adds structure: columns for date, compound, dose, site. For two compounds on a consistent schedule, a spreadsheet can be functional indefinitely. Many experienced users have run multi-compound protocols from a Google Sheet for years.

Where Both Break Down

Neither the Notes app nor a spreadsheet handles reconstitution calculation. Both require mental math or a separate calculator every time you open a new vial — and the calculation needs to happen before the first injection from that vial, not remembered from last time. A wrong BAC water entry means wrong doses for 30 injections. Protocol's built-in calculator stores the vial configuration and pre-populates draw units for every subsequent injection from that vial.

Injection site rotation is invisible in Notes and requires dedicated spreadsheet columns that most people don't maintain. After 6 months of twice-weekly injections, the Notes log doesn't tell you which sites are overused. Protocol's body map shows it at a glance.

Bloodwork correlation is where the spreadsheet fails most visibly. A Total T result logged in a spreadsheet is a number. A Total T result logged in Protocol is a number tagged to the exact dose, ester, injection frequency, and weeks-on-protocol at the time of the draw. The first is a data point. The second is a trend in context.

Do I really need an app — isn't a spreadsheet fine?
For a single compound on a simple schedule, a spreadsheet is fine. It becomes inadequate at three points: when you open a new vial and need to recalculate draw units (Protocol stores and pre-populates this), when you want to correlate bloodwork results to your exact protocol state (Protocol tags every draw to its protocol context), and when you're running 3+ compounds and want to see what's due today without scrolling a log. Most users who switch don't go back.
Is Protocol more private than a Notes app?
Similar. Notes app data syncs to iCloud by default — it's on Apple's servers. Protocol stores everything on-device with no cloud sync and no account. For users who want protocol data to exist only on their phone (particularly relevant for TRT and GLP-1 users), Protocol is more private than iCloud-backed Notes. It also includes stealth mode to change the app icon for home screen discretion.
